Sri Lanka v West Indies - 1st T20 International 1991/2 - Match Report

Sri Lanka v West Indies - 1st T20 International 1991/2 - Premadasa Stadium, Colombo

Pitch: 5 - Normal

Weather: 4 - Hot and sunny

Toss: West Indies

West Indies won the toss, and though their openers got them off to a good start with the bat, found themselves 74/7 shortly after the halfway mark of their innings.
The loss of Brian Lara through injury was sorely felt at that point, but an unbroken partnership of 66* between Best and Marshall gave them something to bowl at.
Ratnayake and Warnaweera lead the way for the home side, taking two wickets apiece in miserly spells.
Sri Lanka fell to 58/4 in reply, with Ambrose among the wickets, but old heads Aravinda de Silva and Arjuna Ranatunga added 80 for the 5th wicket to settle the match.
Arjuna Ranatuna made an unbeaten 60* and won the Man of the Match award, showing his experience and cool head in the run chase.

Sri Lanka won by 5 wickets

Sri Lanka choose what looks a full strength lineup from a full complement of fit players, while West Indies have injury worries.
Veteran keeper Brendon Kuruppu, chosen as opener/keeper will be one to watch in his final season with World Cup selection up for grabs in a few months.
Lara and Adams are missing from the West Indies middle order, and how much this damages the visitors remains to be seen, particularly the loss of Lara given his early tour form.
Hard to pick a winner here with Sri Lanka often good in home conditions and the injuries weakening the visitors, maybe West Indies in a close one.

Pitch: 90 - Nothing in the appearance of this strip suggests that it will misbehave. Dark coloured, flat and featureless it is expected to offer both batsmen and bowlers a fair contest. There might just be a little in it for the spinners late in the match but not enough to influence team selection.

India A make two changes, bringing in opener Ajay Jadeja for keeper Nayan Mongia, and handing the gloves to Dravid for the first time in the Unofficial Test series.
Offspinner Gopal Sharma also returns in place of M.Venkataramana.
West Indies A have a number of injury worries, but still field a fairly competant pace attack and this could be a close contest.
They will however miss their tour leading wicket taker Fast bowler Tony Gray, who took 8 wickets last game and has more than double the wickets of West Indies A's next best on tour.

They were also aided by bad light and rain, and some consistent batting by the middle order after the openers had again failed.
Gray took 4 wickets to finish with 8 for the match, but received little support, and West Indies A would feel disappointed to let such an opportunity slip.
Man of the Match was Stuart Williams, his 237 having lit up the match, featuring brilliant shot making and aggressive intent.

Stuart Williams top scored with a brilliant 237, almost carrying his bat and scoring more than half the runs in an amazing solo performance.
Apart from a half century from Jacobs he received little support, as the home side's spinners, lead by Joshi again caused the batsmen problems.

West Indies A won an important toss, allowing them to bowl first on a Green pitch, and though the over rate was slow, their 4 man seam attack didn't disappoint.
Lead by Tony Gray's 4 wickets, a good team effort saw India A all out for 247 early on Day 2
With the pitch having flattened out overnight the visitors would have been eyeing a lead.
Kambli top scored with a stroke filled 89, and the tail hung around for a while, but the story of the day was the West Indies pace attack lead by Gray.
